Too tired to work out after work? Start with the start
You get home, you'd like to move, and the couch wins. That isn't a verdict on you. Between the front door and the first move sit a lot of small steps. Each one is a place to stop, and a tired evening takes every exit.
This guide is for those evenings, when you want to work out but can't get going. If you feel unwell, are in pain, or your tiredness worries you, ask a doctor first: that's not a guide's job.
You're far from the only one. On October 24, 2026, Google's suggestions for "too tired to workout after work" included "why am i too tired to workout after work", "no energy to workout after work" and "how to workout when tired after work". This guide answers the last one. And a November 2025 post on Reddit's r/crossfit summed up the bind: too tired to train after work, and guilty when resting.
Why it's so hard to work out after work
Often, the hard part is starting. Here's what tends to stand in the way:
- Deciding. What to do, where, how hard: if tonight starts with a choice, the choice is easy to put off.
- The trip. A gym across town means a bag, a drive or a bus, and a changing room, all before you've moved.
- The couch. Sit down once you're in, and getting up is a new decision.
- The setup. Moving the coffee table, finding the mat, picking a video. Small things, and they add up.
- A plan that's too big. If the workout in your head is a big one, a tired you says no to all of it.
- Guilt. Skip one evening, feel bad about it, and the next one gets heavier.
You can't always do much about how tired you are. You can do something about every item on that list.
How to work out when you're tired after work: cut the steps
Each step you take out is one less place to stop. In order:
- Decide before you get home. In the morning, choose what you'll do tonight, and write it as a when-then line: when I put my bag down, I put my shoes on. Tonight, you only follow it.
- Skip the trip, or put it on your way. A common tip is to go straight from work to the gym, before the couch gets you: pack the bag the night before, and change at work. It works when the gym is on your route. When it isn't, bring the workout to where you'll be anyway: home.
- Leave nothing to set up. Clear a patch of floor in the morning. Keep clothes you can move in where you'll see them. If you use a screen, have it ready, so starting takes one tap.
- Agree to start, not to finish. Tell yourself you'll do the first few moves and see: stopping there still counts as starting, and some evenings, you'll keep going. On a flat night, pick a lighter version: a walk around the block, or moves you know by heart.
- Set a nudge for when you get home. A reminder at the hour you usually walk in, on your workout days only. One that rings on your rest days can teach you to swipe it away.
None of this needs a number.
Before work instead?
In that Reddit thread, the most upvoted reply said to go before work, and many others agreed; a few said they go straight from work instead. Mornings follow the same rule: fewer steps between you and the first move, so set things out the night before. No hour suits everyone; the one you keep is the one that counts.
Pick a workout you'd like to do tonight
A tired evening is a bad night to grit your teeth through something you dislike. If it's something you look forward to, there's one less thing to push through.
Researchers have a name for one way to do this: temptation bundling. You keep something you crave for your workout only. In a field experiment published in 2014, researchers from Wharton and Harvard gave some people gripping audiobooks they could listen to only at the gym. At first, those people went to the gym more often than people without the deal. Then the gap shrank over the weeks, especially after Thanksgiving. Our reading: a treat helps you start more than it keeps you coming back.
So look for two things in an evening workout:
- Something you enjoy while you move. A playlist you keep for it, a podcast, a friend to walk with, a game.
- A reason to come back that isn't the treat. A record to beat, a streak, a friend who's waiting, a class you booked.
A game can carry both: playing is the treat, and a record or a streak gives you a reason to come back. Our guide to fitness games you'll want to replay compares the kinds.
Evening options when you're tired, side by side
Five ways to move on a weeknight, judged on what matters when you're tired.
| Criterion | A walk outside | The gym or a class | A video at home | A routine you know | Camera game |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Example | Around the block | A gym near work | A coach's video online | Moves you know by heart | SWADE |
| Before the first move | Shoes on, out the door | A bag, the trip, changing | Space, a screen, picking a video | Space, and remembering the moves | Prop up the phone, step back |
| A trip | No | Yes, unless it's on your way | No | No | No |
| Who decides what's next | You | The class, or your plan | The coach on screen | You | The game |
| What pulls you in | Fresh air, a friend, a podcast | People, a spot you booked | The coach's voice and pace | Mostly willpower | A score to beat, a streak |
| Knows if you did it | You | A class, or a check-in | Nobody | You | The camera counts your jumps, squats or push-ups |
| Price | Free | A membership or a class fee | Many are free | Free | Free daily session, optional Premium |

Rest days are part of the plan
Some evenings, the answer is no. The trick is to make that no part of the plan instead of a crack in it.
Guilt, the other half of that Reddit post, can turn one skipped evening into a skipped week. Three ways to plan the no:
- Pick fewer days than you think. Start with the number of evenings you'd keep on a bad week, not a good one.
- Name your rest days in advance. If Thursday is a rest day, not moving on Thursday is the plan working, not failing.
- Keep a spare for the bad night. Allow a missed evening now and then without calling the week lost. Some apps build that in, with a streak that forgives a missed day; the research behind it is in our guide to a workout game with a daily streak.

Which one fits your evening?
| Your situation | Best fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You get home, sit down, and that's it | Something at home with nothing to set up | No trip, no new decision |
| You'd rather not decide what to do | A class, a video, a game, or a random workout generator | Something else picks the next move |
| You need someone waiting for you | A friend, or a class you've booked | Many find it harder to cancel on a person |
| You'd rather be outside | A walk | Shoes on, and go |
| It's late, with neighbors below | Quiet cardio with no jumps | Fewer thuds through the floor |
| Your own routine bores you | A camera game | A record to beat, and the game keeps count |
| Tonight is a no | Rest, and keep your next planned day | One missed evening isn't a lost week |
| You feel unwell, in pain, or your tiredness worries you | A doctor first | A guide doesn't replace medical advice |
| You're under 15 | Not SWADE | SWADE is made for players aged 15 and up |
SWADE: nothing to set up, nothing to decide
SWADE is a fitness game app for iPhone and Android, coming soon: it isn't in the stores yet. Prop up your phone, step back, and its camera turns your moves into the controller, in two games: the Runner, and Push Flight, where your push-ups fly Sway, the app's weasel.
Nothing to set up. For the day's session, the app puts it in one line: "Prop me up two meters away, whole body in view." That's about six and a half feet, and a bit of floor. Nothing to hold or wear, no video to pick, no trip.
Nothing to decide. You pick 3, 5 or 7 days a week when you set up, and can change them later in Settings › Plan. On each plan day, your Path holds the day's session at your level: timed runs of the Runner. Barbarossa the pirate races down three lanes while you jump the barriers, squat under the gates and step aside to dodge the walls. You see the session's length before you start, and in Timed, a hit only breaks your combo: you keep running. Every fifth node is a record day instead: three hearts, and you run until your last one, chasing your best distance.

Easier tonight? Your level, Beginner, Intermediate or Advanced, "sets how long and how hard each game is." Change it in Settings, or pick another one before a game in Play. In Timed, the game also adapts between rounds, never during one. Need to go easy on your knees or back? Pick one in Profile › Settings › Health, and jumps come out of every session: barriers become walls, and a squat starts the run.

Rest days count. The app says it plainly: "Play these days to keep your streak. Rest days count on their own." Miss a plan day and a day saver covers it, or the streak starts over. You start with one, and the weekly chest, opened once your week is played, brings more.

A nudge on plan days only. At setup, Sway asks "When should I nudge you?": Morning, Lunch or Evening, with Evening picked to start, which the app sets at 7:00 pm. In Settings, scroll to any time, like when you usually get home. The reminder rings around the time you pick, never early, and only on your plan days: "Rest days stay quiet." It skips a day you've already played.
Set it in the evening, and some of Sway's lines are written for it: "One game, then the couch. It'll still be there. I checked." Missed a few plan days? One of her nudges says: "No catching up needed. Just today's game. I'm right here." After a few quiet days, Sway stops nudging until you play again. The reminders are written and scheduled on your phone: nothing leaves it to send them.
What's free. The day's session on your Path is free, with XP and your streak, even when the app's energy is at zero. Every other game spends one energy, which refills over time; Push Flight's first game, a guided warm-up, spends none. Premium is optional: unlimited energy and unlimited day savers, with a 14-day free trial on the yearly plan for eligible players. After three games, the app asks you to create an account.
What it isn't. No coach, no program, no class, and nothing about your sleep or what you eat. Today, it plays on the phone screen.
Your camera stays on your phone
In SWADE, the camera and the pose tracking run on your phone: no image and no video ever leave it. What travels is the outcome of a game: a score, your jumps, squats or push-ups. Two exceptions, only while "Help improve SWADE" is on, as it is at first: usage stats under a random ID, never your account, including a few numbers on how the camera followed you in Push Flight; and now and then a short sample of your moves drawn as a stick figure of 33 points, never an image, sent over Wi-Fi only, with no account or phone ID attached. You can turn it off in Settings. Our servers are in the EU. Details in the privacy policy.
What this guide doesn't cover
- Tiredness itself, and pain. Sleep, food, pregnancy, your cycle, an illness or an injury: a doctor first, not a guide.
- How long to work out. It depends on you and on the evening, so there's no number here.
- Calories and weight. We don't talk about them here.
- Playing on a TV or computer. Today, SWADE plays on the phone screen.
Frequently asked questions
Should I work out if I'm tired after work?
It's your call, and it can change from one evening to the next. If you feel unwell, are in pain, or your tiredness worries you, ask a doctor first. If you'd like to move but can't get started, make the start smaller: nothing to set up, no trip, and permission to stop after the first few moves. If tonight is a no, let it be one evening, not the week: keep your next planned day.
Why is it so hard to work out after work?
Often because the evening puts steps between you and the first move: deciding what to do, getting changed, a trip, a setup, and the couch in between. Each one is a place to stop. Decide before you get home, cut the trip and the setup, and pick something you'd like to do.
How do I get motivated to work out after work?
Count less on motivation and more on the setup. Decide in the morning what you'll do tonight, keep it at home or on your way, and pair it with something you enjoy. Plan your rest days, and set a reminder for when you usually get home, on workout days only.
Can you play SWADE without jumping?
Yes. In Profile › Settings › Health, pick knees or back: jumps come out of every session. In the Runner, barriers become walls you dodge with a side step, and a squat starts the run. Squats stay. Push Flight is played with push-ups, no jumps at all. Any doubt about exercising: ask a doctor first.
How long is a SWADE session?
It depends on you. A Path session is a timed run sized to your level, and you see its length before you start. Chasing a record? You keep running until your last heart.
Is SWADE free?
Yes. The day's session is free, with XP and your streak. Playing more spends energy, which refills over time. Premium is optional: unlimited energy and unlimited day savers, and the yearly plan starts with a 14-day free trial. Push Flight is played from Play, so each game spends one energy; your first, a guided warm-up, is free.
